I guess it depends on how much you value the respect they have for you. If you feel that you can't live without their respect, then don't tell them because there is a chance that they may not love you or respect you anymore. However, if you think you'd be better off living without them as part of your homosexuality, then do away with them. Prepare yourself to be disconnected from them the moment you open the door (of the closet, that is). This way, you're setting your expectations lower so you can be happy with the way things come to be.

Do you really have to tell them? I don't mean hide it, Never hide who you are. I mean, why don't you just say one day, "this is (soandso), my boyfriend/girlfriend." No need to make such a big deal of it, friend :)
