Have coach class airline seats gotten smaller to squish in more people than before? I was 'sardined in' on a flight from CA to MA; my computer bag fit only halfway under the seat so I had to put my feet on it. The guy in front of me was very tall (poor thing) so he had to put his seat back. So I flew for 4 1/2 hours in the fetal position. All I kept thinking about was to try to wiggle a bit to avoid deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Flying has become hazardous to your health.
It definitely seems to have gotten worse. I used to remember airlines like Lufthansa and Emirates were spacious- now they're so tiny, even average sized people spill over into the seat over, it becomes a contest for the armrests! On an international flight in these conditions, its become practically unbearable. You constantly bump into the people next to you (ie: when eating, pulling a book out to read)- and look at each other helplessly like "what are you going to do when you're crammed like this?". In one flight, this heavy set man ahead of me reclined his seat into this tiny woman sitting next to me- so she put her knees and all her weight up to push the seat back. The large guy's response was "What can I do? Person in front recline, so I recline. You can do it too.". The desperation of the dialogue and the interaction between these two made me think how ridiculous the whole situation has become. I wonder if they're trying to make things impossible for us in coach so we're choosing between upgrading to First Class or shipping ourselves UPS in a container.
