Well, the meteorologists screwed up big time yet again... so much for the blizzard! I barely see a damn dusting. There's no other job around where you can change your "action plan" multiple times in one day and still be completely wrong, yet have job security... good lord
You cant entirely blame it on the Meteorologist. Each forecast model had at least something significant south of the Mass Pike within a couple hours of the event. The NAM and to a lesser extent the GFS had over a foot of snowfall accumulations at 06z (around 5am THIS MORNING) for most of Southern New England. Im not entirely sure on what happened but im fairly confident it had something to do with the winds in the upper to mid levels of the Atmosphere-they were unnoticeably unstable just Southeast of Nantucket (death to growing and moving snow bands) .
Plus, the temperatures in every layer of the Atmosphere were warmer than expected-warmer air has the ability to store more precipitation than colder air so therefore resulting in less snowfall accumulations. Even the low pressure itself had something to do with the unexpected snowfall amounts-in the Northern Hemisphere low pressure systems that cause substantial QPF (water equivalent) are usually "surface lows", in this case it was predominantly an upper or mid level low (not sure). Meteorologist around here arnt adapted in forecasting upper or mid level lows, which may have consequently contributed to poor model accuracy.
It wasnt just the New England Meteorologist who were unsuccessful. In the Mid Atlantic the storm totals were doubled than what was originally expected... The storm was truly unique. But yes, they didnt do too well with the storm.
Theres more factors than what ive mentioned, but to be perfectly honest im too lazy to list all of them :P.
BTW. Theres another potential storm next Mon-Tues. This one doesnt look nearly as difficult to predict than the storm currently right above us. But, knowing this year it will probably stay suppressed to the South which will more than likely effect the southern mid atlantic "again". :knocking on wood:
friggin who writes all the facts as if anyone cares? I dont care if its the models fault...looks like the damn 'model' forgot to carry over the 1. Hell, most of the state shut down for an entire day because of these guys and all they said was, "yea we apologize...we messed up." All those years being a meteorologist and not one of em thought, 'oh new england might actually get a dusting'. To say they fucked up is an understatement. They were 15 inches off!!!
